If your vehicle is stolen or hijacked, it can be an overwhelming and confusing experience. Being prepared for such an event can help you navigate the situation more effectively.

Here are a few simple steps to remember:

  • 1. Be Prepared – Find the location of the nearest police station, know your vehicle registration number, and the details of your Tracking Service Provider.
  • 2. Immediate Action – If your vehicle is stolen or hijacked, notify your Tracking Service Provider and report the incident to the police. Make sure to obtain a case number. As with any other insurance related incident, notify your insurance broker as soon as possible.
  • 3. Vehicle Description – Send details of your vehicle (such as the area, registration number, make and model) along with a photo to relevant authorities to assist in the recovery process.
  • 4. Collect Information – If possible, gather details from anyone who assisted you, such as security personnel or witnesses.
  • 5. Register a Claim – Formally register a claim with your insurance broker, intermediary, or your insurer’s contact centre.
  • 6. Vehicle Deregistration – If the vehicle is not recovered within seven days, you may need to deregister it as stolen with the nearest licensing authority, as per the National Road Traffic Act.
  • 7. Vehicle Recovery – If your vehicle is recovered, immediately notify your broker with the location information to facilitate the retrieval process.
The authorities will require your assistance with the following:
    • Identifying the vehicle at the police pound.
    • Providing necessary documentation for upliftment.
    • Submitting copies of vehicle registration/deregistration documents
    • A copy of your ID or proxy.
    • This process is mandatory whenever a vehicle is recovered, according to the National Road Traffic Act.

  • 8. Important Reminder – No government official will request payment for services like towing, clearance, or transport to the pound, as these are provided free of charge to the public.
