When you’re involved in an accident it can be a distressing and
confusing experience. We’d like to help prepare you for the unexpected.
Here are a few simple steps to remember:
- 1. Be Prepared – Keep a first aid kit, torch and reflective triangle in your car.
- 2. If you're involved in an accident, pull over safely and switch on your hazard lights. Check on everyone to ensure they're okay. If medical help is needed, call an ambulance immediately. Avoid moving anyone until help arrives. Find a list of emergency numbers here.
- 3. Take photographs of the damages to all vehicles and parties. Move your vehicle out of the road if it is obstructing traffic.
- 4. Take photographs Exchange and collect third-party information (Driver Details)
- Driver's Name and Surname
- Identity Number
- Contact Number(s)
Vehicle Information:
- Vehicle Make and Registration Number
- A picture of the third party’s vehicle license disk (if available)
- Owner's Name and Contact Number
- Witness Information: (if available)
- 5. Arrange a towing service provider. If you're unable to drive your vehicle, there's no need to arrange for towing yourself. Simply contact your broker, intermediary, or insurer for assistance, and they will help coordinate a towing service provider to transport your vehicle.
- 6. Report the accident to the closest police station in the area where the accident took place. This must be done within 24 hours.
- 7. Stay calm. If the accident was not your fault, you may feel angry and want to confront the other driver. Remember, this will not help you or the situation.
- 8. See a doctor. Even if you feel fine, it’s best to see a professional medical practitioner to make sure there are no underlying injuries that could become troublesome days or weeks after the accident.
- 9. Seek help. If you’re involved in a serious accident, make sure you seek trauma counselling.
- 10. Register your claim. Contact your broker, intermediary, or insurer to register your claim. Have all information readily available to ensure a hassle-free claims experience.
