The Ins and Outs of Travel Insurance

When traveling, the last thing we want to worry about is loss of luggage, cancellation (should you not be able to travel due to medical reasons), curtailment, personal liability, medical emergencies, and accidental death or disablement abroad. Luckily, travel insurance provides you with cover for all of the above, allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy your personal or business trip with complete peace of mind.

To top it off, travel insurance also provides a level of protection against currency fluctuations. Remember that your policy will be paid for in local currency, and all claims incurred are normally in foreign currencies.

So what does a travel insurance policy cover?

A comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide:

  • Emergency medical cover,
  • Losses incurred due to unforeseen cancellation or having to cut your trip short,
  • Death and disability cover,
  • Personal liability cover,
  • Luggage cover,
  • As well as other inconvenience benefits, for example costs incurred when being forced to extend your stay due to adverse weather conditions.

By when should travel insurance be obtained?

Travel insurance must be obtained before you embark on your journey, and cannot be purchased once you are overseas. It’s recommended that you purchase your chosen policies as soon as your trip has been paid for, as this will allow you to enjoy cancellation coverage. Note however that the journey cancellation benefit is only effective six months prior to departure.

Will pregnant and elderly travellers be able to get cover?

Yes. Any pregnancy related emergency that occurs up to the first day of the 26th week of pregnancy will be covered. Senior passengers, aged 70 and over, will have to pay a higher premium and will unfortunately not receive coverage on pre-existing illnesses, cardiovascular diseases and cerebrovascular disease.

Who is covered on a double policy?

Any two people that are travelling together on the same itinerary can be covered on a double policy.

Can I participate in sporting activities?

Yes, sporting activities undertaken for leisure purposes, for example, snow skiing, water skiing and scuba diving, are automatically covered. For comprehensive cover, all other sports that are considereddangerous, high risk or professional require a sports extension that must be arranged prior to departure.

Can a policy be changed after purchase to enhance the cover?

Yes, as long as it is conducted before departure.
